House of Quiet Light

One hundred and fifty-five square metres, four materials, and a window positioned for a single hour of the day.

IThe Brief

A ceramicist and her partner wanted a house that would not compete with the objects made inside it.

IIOur Response

We built a neutral vessel: oatmeal plaster, pale ash, paper and raw steel. The only expressive element is a narrow east window aligned to catch the first hour of light across the workshop floor.

01Context

A machiya, halved

The original townhouse was too large for two people. Half was given back to a garden.

One window that matters

A 240mm slot on the east elevation was set out from a survey of sun angles taken across a full year.

03Materials

Neutral by intent

Every surface was tested against the client’s glazes. Nothing was chosen that would tint a celadon.

Millimetres

All joinery reveals are 6mm. All floor junctions are shadow-gapped. Nothing is scribed; everything is set out.

05Atmosphere

Quiet, and then quieter

There is no artificial light above 2400K anywhere in the house, and no source visible from any seated position.
